All About Making Money With a Website
Making money with a website appeals to many people (including myself) for many reasons. It maybe because we want to earn a bit extra on the side, want to live a certain lifestyle or live in a place where travelling to and from work is difficult. This is why lots of people are becoming self employed by starting their own online business. In this post I am going to tell you all about making money with a website. Hopefully, this will help you decide if you want to start your own online business or give you an idea on how to do it.
Advantages of Making Money With a Website
1. The Sky is The Limit
There are so many ways to make money with a website. A simple Google search will reveal that to you. Reviewing products and services, promoting businesses and their products and taking photos are just some ways you can make ridiculous amounts of money with a website.
2. Flexible Lifestyle
A flexible lifestyle is the main reason I started my online business. You can choose your own hours to suit whatever you want to do with your time. Rather than working to someone else’s timetable, missing out on doing what you want or begging for time off. You become the master of your own time.
You can also do it from anywhere with an internet connection. Whether you want to work from home, beach, camper van or the mountains (like me).
3. Inexpensive to Start
Depending on how you intend on making money from a website, determines how much money you invest. But, the basics are a computer and an internet connection. You can start earning money straight away with these basics. Building a website is very cheap, but the main investment in making money from a website is your time. To make life easier and speed up your success, you really need to get educated on best practices. Luckily, there are free affiliate marketing courses to help you.
4. Easier to Learn Than You Think
Before I started my affiliate marketing business, I knew nothing about it. But, I realised it was going to give me the lifestyle that I wanted, so I gave it a shot. I spent a lot of time learning how to do it (and I still am), but you can build a website in less than a minute, before you start adding content to it.
There are a few ways to make money online that will get you instant rewards. This will be things like filling in surveys, data inputting etc. But, the rewards are quite small. However, there are other ways to earn money that take a long time to work, but will make you lots of money in time if you do do it properly. Some will Evan earn you money while you are sleeping. It is great to wake up in the morning to find that someone has bought something through your website and put some money in your account. This is another benefit of not having set opening hours, as an online business is world wide.
Disadvantages of Making Money With a Website
Unfortunately, the internet is full of scammers targeting vulnerable people that don’t yet know what they want to do. The biggest give away of a scammer, is that they will ask for money upfront. No legitimate organisation will do this, especially if they are expecting you to earn money from them or to promote them. When I was looking for courses for affiliate marketing, I came across lots of “gurus”. I didn’t believe any of them and nearly gave up. But, I learned how to spot the scammers.
All About Making Money With a Website
When I was looking for a flexible business, making money with a website seemed like the best way to do it. However, I had no idea how people did it. There are lots of websites that people make money from, but it is not obvious how. Here, I am going to go through all the ways people make money with a website.
Adverts are one way of making money with a website. When you look in to this further, there are different levels of success. Some websites make millions from adverts alone, while others make virtually nothing. Adverts will only really make you money with your website if you can attract hundreds of thousands of visitors per month. You will get paid a small amount of money when a visitor clicks on the advert. This amount will be pennies, hence why you need a lot of traffic to your site. A good example of an advert is like the one below. Feel free to click on it, it won’t cost you anything 😉
2. Affiliate Marketing
As I said before, affiliate marketing is how I make money with a website. This is where you create content that is SEO friendly. By this, I mean you write your content around people’s search engine queries within a niche.
For example, I can use a keyword search tool to see how many people are searching for information on a certain product. I can then write about that product or similar products, knowing that there are a certain amount of people in the world that want to know about it.
The screen shot above is from when I was doing research about this very post. The fact that 8904 people search for “about making money with a website” per month and it attracts 1514 people to the first page of Google. The QSR is the amount of other websites that use the same keyword. With this data, I know that it was worth writing this post. 25 websites is not a lot of competition, you really need to aim below 50 QSR, and average traffic over 100.
So I can do similar research in to products people want to buy. These products may sports equipment, kitchen appliances or anything that you are interested in promoting or reviewing. People will visit your site looking for information on the products you have written about. If they like it, they will click on an affiliate link and buy it. An affiliate link is how your sales are tracked by the program you have joined. It will reward you with a percentage of what that product is worth. This is how you make money from affiliate marketing.
The customer, probably won’t know that you will get money when they buy through your link, as it is seamless. It won’t make any difference to them either, as there is no extra charge for going through your website.
This sounds great doesn’t it? It is, but you need to know that affiliate marketing takes a long time to make any money at all. But, when you get it right with a lot of commitment and time it is definitely worth doing. It gives me a great lifestyle and I spend all day writing about stuff I am interested in. You don’t need to be a wordsmith to be an affiliate marketer, just a communicator.
An example of an affiliate link would be like the one below. If you click on it, you will notice that it will take you through to Amazon. If you bought it, I would get a tiny amount of money.
Imagine if you had a few thousand people visiting your recommendations per day. The more people you have reading your recommendations, the more likely there will be people that want to buy it. You can promote pretty much anything. Products with big price tags will give you some good money. If you managed to sell a designer freezer for £1,000 on Amazon, you get 7-8% of the value.

You can make money with a website by selling actual, real life things! There are people that write content, just like an affiliate marketer, but instead of promoting other people’s products, they refer people to their own products on sites like Amazon. This could potentially earn you more money than an affiliate marketer, but you have to have a stock of products and have to deal with postage and customer service too.
Dropshipping is a where a store doesn’t physically hold the stock that it sells. When it sells a product to a customer, it buys it from a third party who sends directly to the customer. As a result, the merchant never sees or handles the product.
This is a great idea and I was seriously considering this as an alternative to affiliate marketing. It has its advantages and disadvantages. It is low risk and has the potential to earn you lots of money. However, you have to deal with customer service issues that are not your fault, sometimes you get stock shortages and it costs more money than affiliate marketing to deliver the service.
5. Online Courses
If you have a certain skill or expertise, you can create an online course to make money. The way you do this, is to build a website that has lots of free information. Then you can collect email addresses from visitors then send them newsletters that lead them to an online course. This is one of the ways that people make money with a website without being too obvious about it. Selling online courses is a very lucrative method and is one of the best ways to get people to spend money. But it is actually beneficial to both parties, as the customer does get what they pay for. The good thing about this, is that you really only get people signing up that are genuinely interested in your product or service.
6. Selling Ebooks
Again, if you have a certain skill set or knowledge base, you can write an e-book about it. Create content on your website to attract traffic that is interested in a certain subject. Then you can give them more information within your e-book and charge them for it.
This works 2 fold, as you will get their email address, meaning you can alert them to further publications that they may be interested in.
7. Sponsored Posts
Once your website has a good following and substantial traffic, you can write blogs that feature other people’s products or services for money. This is kind of an advert in a blog form. It has to be done right and be relevant to your audience though. If not, it can flop and damage the reputation of both you and the company you are promoting.
8. Sell Your Website
An established website can be sold for more money than you think. If your website is earning £500 per month, you can sell it for between £5,000 and £10,000. Although, I don’t recommend having this as your end goal for making money with a website. It is all very well selling your website when you fancy a change or you are making a life decision. But, websites should be made for the long haul. This way to won’t be rushed and it will be a better website.
You can sell your website on Flippa. It is a bit like eBay for websites. Flippa is a good way to see what people have done to build successful websites. There are some really odd websites on there that are worth a lot of money.
More About Affiliate Marketing
If you are not interested in affiliate marketing, I apologise for banging on about it, but this is how I make my living. It is a great way to make money from a website. It is a game of hard work and patience though. There is no such thing as a get rich quick scheme. But, if you are willing to learn how to do it the right way, work hard and be patient, it can make you a lot of money.
The graphic above is the affiliate marketing sales process. The tough part, is creating content that is SEO friendly. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Search engines like google, will put the most relevant websites at the top. So, your content has to be the best it can be to make it to the top. There are certain techniques to do this. They are not difficult, but in a nutshell a post on your website needs:
- to have 1000 to 1500 words for regular posts
- to have 2000 words for competitive keywords
- to include external links
- to include internal links
- to contain relevant a keyword
- to have images with small file sizes
- to have a clean and responsive (mobile friendly) design
There is a bit more to it than this, but this is the general idea. If you manage to get your content to the top of a google search, more people are likely to visit your site, read your content and buy through it. With the right training, effort and patience, it is possible to make a good amount of money with a website using affiliate marketing.
