Get your Affiliate Marketing Keywords: 7 Top Tips
Researching keywords is one of the most important parts of affiliate marketing. Keywords are what lets your users find your content organically through search engines. If you build an amazing website, but not doing keyword research, your site will not reach its potential. This is because it is not visible enough for people to find it. Finding the right keywords and using them properly, will put your site in front of the people who you want to see it. Here is my guide on how to get your affiliate marketing keywords.
1. Choose your niche
Before you even start to get your affiliate marketing keywords, you need to choose your niche. Your niche is the type of product or service that you want to promote. This will be the thing that you will become an authority on, in order for people to trust in what you are saying. Once you have your niche and joined some affiliate marketing programs, you need to get your affiliate marketing key words.
The niche that you choose will determine your audience. This will in turn determine the products you promote. This is a very important part of affiliate marketing as you will base your keyword research around it. For example, if you decided your niche was home fitness products, you will want to target people wanting a healthy lifestyle, therefore, you will base keywords around that. Or your affiliate marketing niche may be electric guitars. If so you will need to products that are related and cater to a different audience.
2. Get Thinking
You need to have a bit of a brain storming session to get your affiliate marketing keyword research off to a good start. It is easy to get a mental block and struggle to think of a place to start. However, with the right training, you will have some tools to help you get started. But, you can just start with the basics. If we go back to the home fitness product niche, think of search terms you would use yourself if you were looking for information online. You are likely to choose similar search terms to what others are looking for. Using these terms in your content will make sure it will be found by people looking for information and recommendations.
3. Go In-Depth
After your initial brainstorming session, you need to start going a bit more in-depth. A good way to do this is to simply use Google. For our home fitness example niche, you may want to Google “space saving home fitness equipment”. This will give you lots of results and examples of products you can review. Additionally, scroll all the way to the bottom of the first page.
You will see related searches, that will help you think of more content and keywords. You can also visit Amazon. Here you can search for products within your niche and look at the review and description sections. You will find related words or phrases that frequently come up when using these search terms. You may see terms like “easy to store” or “strengthen core”. Add these terms to your brainstormed keyword list. When you write content around these keywords, it will attract people to specific features they are looking for. Doing this will give you a great insight in to what your target audience is looking for and values.
Another great resource for coming up with ideas, is question and answer websites, such as Quora. Here you can see what questions people are asking with regard to your niche. You can use this information to build content for your website. Also, Quora is pretty good for when you have lots of content on your site, as you can post links to answer peoples questions. This brings traffic to your site!
I use Facebook groups too. These are really good for coming up with ideas, as people ask the group questions regarding a certain subject. For example, I am on lots of mountain bike groups. Here, I can see what people need advice on, write content to answer the questions and post links helping people out. This is usually fine, unless you get too spammy.
4. Alphabet Soup
Another way to get your affiliate marketing keywords, is to use the alphabet soup method. This is a very simple but effective way of coming up with ideas. All you need to do is use Google search.
To use the alphabet soup method, simply type your niche in to the Google search bar and add each letter of the alphabet. This will give you loads of search terms that people use that are related to your niche. I use this method all the time.
5. Keep up to date
You will get a huge list of keywords using these methods, which is good as this list can last you months. However, you will still need to do this regularly. This is because the world is changing all the time, with regard to consumer tastes and marketing trends. Also, if you plan on promoting a specific product, you may want to do it sooner rather than later, before interest has wained or competition builds.
6. Target with Intent
You intend to promote things for people to buy, therefore your keyword research for affiliate marketing should reflect this when it can. For example, rather than just writing about your niche products, and answering questions, you need to include actual suggestions and keywords that imply intent for buyers.
Some people will be searching the internet looking for an answer to a question, but they may not necessarily be wanting to buy. Therefore, their keyword search terms would reflect that. So you should use keywords and phrases that suggest visitors to your website, purchase the product. This way, they are more likely to buy through your affiliate link.
An example of intent in your keyword research for affiliate marketing using the home fitness example niche would be “best dumbbells to buy” over leaving the keyword at “best dumbbells”.
7. Reduce Competion
You won’t be the only one using the potential keywords in your list. Therefore, you will want to eliminate the highly competitive keywords. This is because, the more completion you have, the hard it will be to rank in search engines. You need to aim to get your website more visible than all the rest. You will find that the most general keywords are the most competitive. For example, “best dumbbells” would be a very competitive and very difficult keyword to use. Therefore you should be more specific, with a keyword such as “best dumbbells for home use” instead.
You can use keyword research tools, such as Jaaxy to see how many other websites are using particular keywords. It will also tell you how much traffic the keywords attract. You can learn all about the Jaaxy keyword research tool here.
Doing proper keyword research will allow you to get your affiliate marketing keywords. They will also be quality ones that will really make your content visible and make your website successful.
