How can I make money blogging?: Everything you need to know
You have realised that you can make money online right? But, you are not sure how all these bloggers can afford they Instagram lifestyles. Well, in this post I am going to reveal the answers to the question of “how can I make money blogging?”.
Types of Bloggers
There are different types of blogger in the world and if you are thinking of becoming one to make some money, you need to be able to identify the type of blogger you want to be.
1. Personal Blogger
The personal blogger uses their website as a personal diary. This is a form of social media, where the blogger shares everything about their life online. They will typically use WordPress websites and spend about 15 minutes per day to publish their thoughts and experiences.
Some personal bloggers will literally share everything about their lives, while some will focus on a particular interest. This may be a hobby, a sport, fitness or a personal challenge they are facing.
2. Blogger For Business
When people blog for business, they post blogs that will attract traffic to a website. They may do this for their own business or for someone else. The content they create is focussed on the business or industry, rather than themselves.
An example of a business that would benefit from one of these blogs is a holiday company. Blogs that give potential customers information about their services, things to do and see etc.
3. Professional Blogger
Professional bloggers make a salary from their blogs. They monetise their blogs in a number of ways, such as adverts, commissions and promotions. They need to attract lots of traffic to their websites to increase their earning potential. They do this by focussing on website or several very narrow niche websites.
4. Affiliate Blogger
Affiliate bloggers make money from reviewing commissions from affiliate marketing. They do this by creating content such as reviews of products and services. The idea is that the content encourages visitors to the website to buy stuff through their affiliate links.
Affiliate marketers will either write lots of reviews on one website or have a whole website dedicated to one particular product. A good knowledge of SEO (search engine optimisation) is essential for this. However, this is pretty easy to learn.
Pretty much any time you see a review online, whether that be on a blog site or newspaper’s website, you can count on it having affiliate links.
5. Freelance Blogger
Freelance bloggers work independently, writing blogs for businesses. This is a good way of making money for people with blog writing experience. I do a little bit of this myself. Most of the time the client has ideas of what topics they want covering. But, sometimes they ask me to come up with some ideas for them.
If you want to do this as a full time job, you need to build up a portfolio of content the you can show to potential customers. Once you get to a point where you ar in demand, you can earn a living by doing this.
How To Make Money Blogging
Now you know the different types of bloggers out there, I will now share with you the different ways that bloggers earn money.
Placing adverts on a blog page is one of the most popular ways bloggers make money. There are two different types of adverts:
Pay Per Click – These are usually in the form of banners placed on each post. Every time someone clicks on the banner, the blogger gets a small amount of money for it.
CPM – CPM means “cost per 1000 impressions”. This is where the blogger gets paid a certain amount of money depending on how many times the advert is seen.
The most popular way bloggers put adverts on their website, is vis Google Adsense. It is pretty clever, as you just place the banner on your pages and it automatically shows adverts relevant to your content.
Bloggers can also sell advertising space on their websites. When blogs get lots of traffic, businesses will approach bloggers asking for their adverts to be placed on the websites. Bloggers will also contact relevant businesses offering advertising space. With private adverts, bloggers can set their own price for placing adverts.
2. Affiliate Links
I touched on this earlier, but many people (including myself) make their living with affiliate marketing.
In a nutshell, here is how affiliate marketing works:
- Someone searches for something on the internet. This could be to help them make a decision on what to buy.
- Your niche website gives them the information they need.
- Your website has an affiliate link to a relevant product they want to buy.
- Because you have directed that person to the product they buy, you are rewarded with a commission.
By basing content around certain keywords, affiliate marketers can target their audience’s needs. Google’s algorithms determine how relevant the content is relative to people’s searches. The most relevant content gets to the top of the search, which means it gets more traffic.
3. Digital Products
Some bloggers use their websites to sell digital products. They build up a status of authority with their site and sell things such as:
- Online courses
Once a blogger has a good following and is established, they can sell access to certain areas of their website in the form of memberships. This is can be tricky, as you need to offer something that people can’t get for free elsewhere.
5. Blogging For Credibility
Bloggers can build trust to gain credibility within a certain area of expertise. If they are successful they become a recognised figure in their field. This may lead to financial opportunities, such as book deals, co-writing, training seminars or public speaking.
This isn’t making money directly from blogging, but it works for some people and can be very lucrative, especially if they can sell their successful website or brand.
Tips For Creating A Successful Blog
1. Create Quality and Relevant Content
Your content needs to be engaging enough to keep people reading it. Your website visitors are the ones that are spending money, so you need to make sure you keep them on your site for as long as possible.
3. Create A Mailing List
When people sign up to your mailing list, you know you are doing something right. These people are your fans and you can put more content in front of them with a mailing list. Every month, you can send them updates attracting them to your content, which will make you money.
4. Use A Good Domain Name
Make sure your blog is a .com website. This shows that it is serious and not just a hobby website as you will see with other suffixes.
5. Use A Quality Host
It is tempting to use the cheapest website host you can find. However, this isn’t always a good idea as they can be unreliable and slow. This puts off visitors to your website.
5. Get Trained
To learn all these techniques, you can do a lot of research yourself. However, you are likely to miss out certain steps. I learned (and still am) from Wealthy Affiliate. It is a one stop shop for affiliate marketing, with training, a keyword research tool, hostinf and lots of support. There is a risk free way of seeing what it has to offer too. The Free membership gives you training and 2 free websites to play with.
