Traditionally a blog is an online journal or a source of information. They show posts in reverse chronological order, so the reader can keep up with the latest news. There are lots of reasons why someone will start a blog. Some people will start a personal blog as an online diary. Some may start a business blog to make money and others with use blogging to attract people’s attention to their website. In this post I am going to answer the question “How can I make money from blogging?”.

How can I make money from blogging?

You have probably either started a blog and wondering how to monetise it, or you are looking in to how blogging could be a feasible business venture. Either way, it can be done, but you wonky get rich quickly from it. However, if you use the correct techniques you can make enough money to support your lifestyle. Here are the ways that you can monetise your blog.

Adverts

If you have an established blog (or one that is on its way), you can make money by placing adverts on your website. There are a few ways to do this.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

Many bloggers place banners on their posts that advertise certain relevant products and services to the content. When someone clicks on the banner, they will get a small amount of money. This is known as Pay Per Click.

CPM

CPM stands for Cost per 1000 impressions. If you have one of these on your website, you will get a certain amount of money depending on how many times it has been seen. So, the larger your audience, the more money you will receive.

The most popular way of placing adverts on websites, is Google Adsense. This is a very clever way of placing adverts on your blog. Just copy a small amount of code to where you want the banner and it will automatically place adverts relevant to your content or the reader’s interests.

Sell Advert Space

You can sell advert space on your website too. This is for more established websites with large audiences. You will be able to agree a price with the advertisers that approach you.

Sponsored Posts

You can create content that is sponsored by other companies. This means that you can showcase the company, their products or services. This may come in the form of a “review”. For this you really need to have a large audience and attract the attention of potential sponsors.

Sell Your Own Stuff

If it is relevant to your blog, you can sell your own products and services on your blog. This could be physical products, but it could also be courses and ebooks that you have put together. For this, you will have to be established and an authority in your niche.

Affiliate Marketing

This is by far the best way to make money from blogging. This is when you become a third party to retailers. By promoting products and services, you can earn a commission when people buy through your website. By signing up to affiliate programs, you can promote pretty much anything that is bought online.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

I am going to explain how affiliate marketing actually works using an example. This will explain how you can make money blogging.

Step 1

Sarah wants to buy a new mountain bike helmet. She especially likes the idea of buying a Fox Dropframe. Therefore, she searches for “Fox Dropframe review” on Google.

Step 2

Right at the top of her search, there is a review of this helmet from www.mtb-threads.com (yes, this happens to be one of my websites). The reason that it is at the top of the search, is because it has the most relevant information and I used all the right SEO techniques to get it there.

Step 3

Sarah reads the review of the mountain bike helmet and she decides that it is the one she wants. So, she clicks on the button to buy and she gets taken to the relevant online shop to buy the helmet.

Step 4

When Sarah buys the helmet, I get 4% of the sales price of the helmet. But, depending on the affiliate program, you can get anything from 1 to 75% of the sales price.

That is how the affiliate marketing process works. If you have a whole website full of information like this, you can get lots of traffic which translates to lots of money. This is especially the case when it comes to higher priced items, such as mountain bikes, fridges, TVs, mobile phones etc.

Why I Think Affiliate Marketing is The Best Way To Make Money Blogging

Affiliate marketing has been around for quite a while and is a fantastic way of making money online. It is pretty easy to start and is one of the cheapest ways to start an online business.

Blogs are the perfect platform for affiliate marketing. This is because once you have built up some trust with your audience, you van recommend products that will solve their problems or enhance their lives. By earning people’s trust, you have a greater chance of them buying the products and services you recommend. This in turn, means that you earn much more money from your blog.

Affiliate marketing isn’t complicated, but there are a few techniques that you need to employ to make it work. By getting proper training, you can learn these techniques. I found that investing in a quality training course was very worthwhile.

How To Be A Successful Affiliate Marketer

As I said, there are a few techniques that are necessary to make your blog bring in the money.

Create Great Content

Some people believe that any content is good content. This is not the case. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that you want your audience to read it and trust what you are saying. If you don’t do it properly, they will not be engaged with it. This means they won’t hang around and buy stuff through your blog.

The other reason is, that search engines look for information relevant to people’s searches. If you don’t create your content in a way that search engines deem irrelevant, people won’t find it.

Content is king! People will not stay with you if your content is no good, and it is really easy for them to close the window or click the back button. Creating content  properly is essential, but the proper methods can be easily learned.

Content needs to be of high quality, engaging, to be a certain length and have great call to actions. These are what people like and is what encourages them to spend money.

Get People Flooding To Your Blog

One of the essential skills of affiliate marketing, is understanding Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

You really need people to find all that great content and the best way is the SEO method. The most successful blogs use great SEO techniques to be more visible to their audience. SEO is a huge subject, but you can have a look at my SEO checklist, to see how to get your blog to the top of people’s searches here.

Good SEO techniques will bring people to your website without you having to spend a penny on advertising or promotions. This is where you will either win or fail with attracting an audience to your website. Therefore, in order to make money from blogging, you need to master the SEO techniques that will put your website infant of your audience.

You can trawl the internet to find out how to learn these techniques, but you can check out the training course that I did. This way you won’t miss out on any of the really important stuff.

Be Consistent and Patient

The big problem with affiliate marketing, is that it takes time. Many bloggers get inpatient and give up too soon. This is because they think that after creating some content it will magically jump to the top of Google and start making money straight away. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Websites need to prove themselves to search engines that  they are a good source of information. This means you need to create a lot of great consistent content. You will not make any money for a few months, this is because the SEO techniques you have used take time to work.

It is really easy to get disheartened and give up, I have been very close to it myself. This is especially the case when you are creating lots of content, but nobody is seeing it, let alone spending money. However, the hard work pays off eventually.

Work Hard

Some blogs are just for fun, written as a diary or to entertain. These are great, but if you want to earn money, you need to take your blog very seriously and seen as a proper business. Businesses require lots of hard work to be a success. You need to put in at least 15 to 20 hours per week in to your blog to make money from it. With hard work, you can even get to a point where you are hiring people to create content for you.

Affiliate marketing brings delayed gratification. You don’t earn a certain amount of cash for working a certain amount of hours. You start with nothing, then it builds to pennies and snowballs from there!

Get Proper Training

If your intention is to make money blogging, you really should get some training. To get your blog to the top of search engines, you need to tick lots of boxes to ensure that it has all the necessary qualities for maximum visibility.

Learning how to do this isn’t complicated, but a proper training course will give you the essential skills to get your blog ranked well in people’s search results. You can of course, trawl the internet for hints, tips and techniques. But, the information could be outdated and you won’t have a structured path to follow that gives you all the information in the right order.

When I was looking for quality training, I kept coming across “gurus” the promised that the had the key to overnight success in affiliate marketing. I didn’t trust any of them and I am glad that my instincts told me to stay away from them. This is because I have learned how to do it properly since seeing these potential scammers. I’m not saying they are all scammers, but I would be hesitant to hand over any money to them. However, I found a training provider that didn’t require any money at all.

      Hi Charles,

Thanks for your comment. The problem with Adsense is that you don’t get that much money from it and it distracts visitors from links you would earn more money from.
