You have probably had the thought that there must be better ways of earning a lining than working for someone else. You are dead right! Starting your own online business can be very lucrative, and it seems like the people that are doing it are earning lots of money with very little effort. Trust me, it is not easy to do, but it is so worth it in so many ways. In this post I am going to tell you hoe to become a digital entrepreneur, while letting you know about all the good things and the bad.

The Bad Things

I am going to start off with the down sides. This is because, if you don’t think you can cope with these, you should carry on doing what you are doing now or find another way of making money.

It Takes Time

You will probably have seen people on social media claiming that they have earned $100,000 overnight. In some cases, this may be true. But they have got to this point because they have spent a lot of time, effort, learning, reading, creating and making mistakes.

With many online businesses, it takes a long time to make money. There is no such thing as a get riche quick scheme. Those “gurus” that litter the internet that say you can earn money quickly are just trying to sell you a course. Courses are good and help you with the right steps, but they will not ensure that you will be driving a Ferrari in a couple of months.

It Is Hard Work

By this, I mean you have to put the effort in. Depending on what business you choose, the steps involved are not that complicated, especially if you do your homework first. So the key is to make sure you have some good systems in place to make sure that your working day is as easy and as productive as possible.

There Can Be Unpredictable Problems

Search engine algorithms are something you need to keep in your mind. By appeasing the Google gods, you will get your website to rank well. However, every now and then the algorithm changes. This can be really damaging to your business, as your content can instantly be pushed down the search results. I have had this problem myself and my website traffic dropped by two thirds! It takes a while to over come this, but it is part of the “game”.

Lots Of Competition

Due to the low cost of starting an online business, there are a lot of people doing it. But this should not put you off. There are ways you can reduce your competition, i.e. choosing the right niche, choosing the right products, good SEO knowledge, creating quality content, using quality keywords and being better than your competitors.

The Good Things

So, do you think you can cope with the stuff above? If so, you will enjoy the benefits of becoming a digital entrepreneur.

Flexibility

This is the main one for me. By not having a boss, you can choose your working hours. As long as you make sure that you are productive enough to complete all of your daily and weekly tasks, you can work the hours you like.

Freedom

You can work from wherever you like. This is the main part of what Adventurous Affiliate is about. I want people to enjoy life on their own terms. Live and work where you want, travel, visit places and experience things that you wouldn’t be able to do if you were working on someone else’s timetable. With this lifestyle, you don’t need to wait for the weekend or your holidays. 

Huge Earning Potential

As I said before, making money takes a long time. But, by putting in consistent effort in to the right places, the sky is the limit. Your audience spans the globe and can it can buy stuff through your website at any time of the day from anywhere.

Cheap To Start

In comparison to a traditional “bricks and mortar” business, online businesses are much cheaper. In the beginning, you need a computer, an internet connection and a hosted website. You will need to learn a lot, so a training course for whatever business you choose to start is a good idea (just stay away from the “gurus”). Your online business may require some paid adverts too, depending on what you decide to do.

Scaleable

Once you start to earn some cash, you should put it back in to the business. This will help you scale it up. Also the data you collect from analytics will tell you what you are doing right and will let you know where you should put your efforts. Additionally, by building up a mailing list you will be able to send people that have bought in to your brand updates and links to products they may be interested in.

How To Become A Digital Entrepreneur

Still interested? Ok, lets carry on. Now I am going to go through the steps you need to take to ensure that you choose the right online business for you and how you get started. I will also give you some ideas for your online venture.

Step 1 - Decide What You Want From Your Business

Different people will want different things from their online business. Personally, I had a few prerequisites that my online business had to meet. 

  • It had to give me flexibility to work whenever I wanted to
  • It had to allow me to work from anywhere
  • It had to be legitimate, as I didn’t want to have to waste my time or anyone else’s
  • There had to be quality training for it, as I was starting from scratch
  • It had to be with the effort with regards to how much money I could earn

I suggest that you come up with a similar list for yourself. This will help you narrow down your choices. This list led me to start my affiliate marketing business.

Step 2 - Research Your Options

There are a number of different online businesses you can start. Create a list of online businesses and research each one. There may be some that you instantly reject, that is fine, but I would learn about them bit now, as your perceptions of what they entail may be wrong. I found this when researching potential businesses for me to start. Some examples are:

This is not an exhaustive list, but it will give you a good start in to things to look in to. There is a lot involved with all of these options, some will allow you to use current skills, while others will mean that you need to start from scratch. But this could be the fresh new start you are looking for.

Step 3 - Drill Down In To The Details

Once you have looked in to a few options, you will have a good idea of what you are willing to do to start your internet business. There will be a lot of information on the internet that you can read without having to buy anything. This can be overwhelming, as the amount of information available is ridiculous. You will find that lots of people have different ideas about how to be successful and the information sources you find will contradict each other.

I recommend reading up on the potential business, but finding a training course that you like the look of and committing to one source of information. Avoid cheap eBooks, you will find the same information for free. Do lots of research in to the expensive courses before you commit to paying for them. There are a lot of scammers out there waiting to take your money.

It is possible to find out all the information yourself, but following a structured course will mean that you don’t miss out on any important steps. If you can find a free trial or membership to a course you will be able to see how good it is. Don’t hand your money over until you are sure that you have chosen the business and training provider for you.

Step 4 - Commit

It is very easy to procrastinate and hesitate before making a decision to start your online business. You will be concerned that you may have chosen the wrong thing for you. You will probably be worried that it may not work at all. This is all natural, but, you need to do your homework before you commit to eliminate as many as those doubts as possible. Then you need to jump in with both feet!

Uncertainty is part of the thrill of starting something new. It is also one of the motivational factors for getting the work done. The harder you work, the more chance that you will make a success out of your online business.

Tips For Making Your Business A Success

The steps above are quite simplified, but you will probably realise that there is a lot of work you need to do yourself in order to make the right decision for your business. 

Be Patient

This is the third time I have mentioned the amount of time it takes to earn money, but it is something I really think should be in your head. For example, with affiliate marketing, as a beginner it takes months before you make a penny. It will be over a year before you see some nice money coming in. It is unlike having a job where you get paid for the amount of hours you work. One day, after creating loads of content, your Google rankings will improve and a little bit of money will start to trickle in. Then it will slowly start to increase as more content gets infant of your audience. Once you become an authority and build trust with your audience, the money will start to snowball. There will be better months than others, but it will happen if you do it properly.

Be Consistent

By working on your business every single day, you will be productive enough to keep your audience informed and engaged. Also, search engines love websites that are regularly posting informative content. The most informative and relevant content is ranked the highest, you just have to keep plugging away at it.

Get Organised

Being organised is a huge part of being a digital entrepreneur. This is because you need to be as productive as possible. Make a plan at the start of every week, so you know exactly what you need to do. It is much harder to be productive when you start with an empty page.

Never Stop Learning

Learning a small thing every day leads to a huge amount of skills. Learn about an aspect of Google analytics, something new about SEO, a way to make infographics for free, how to create a mailing list, how to find problems with your website with Google Search Console or how to create effective calls to action.

    Thank you so much for the awesome post!  I really enjoyed reading this because I have been in the digital market for a few month now, and had to figure some of this out myself.  I really like how you made it clear that it is hard work and takes time.  Just like with any honest job.  But to stay patient and consistent is the best way to get the results!

    Hi Tom! Thank you very much for this amazing post! Your post really opened my eyes to confirm my steps to become a digital entrepreneur.

    I think what you write here is a good solution to making money as a digital entrepreneur. But, I have absolutely no experience and knowledge about affiliate marketing or the internet world.

    Can you suggest to me what program I can use to learn about this with a zero experience case?
    And how far can Affiliate Marketing do we have to go to the office?
    From your experience, how many years do we need to earn at least $ 1500 a month?

      How much money you earn depends on so many things, it is hard to give you a realistic timeframe. This is because it depends on your niche, your products and how hard you work. But, generally as a beginner, you will only be earning pennies after four or five months. Most people don’t start earning anything significant in their first year.

    Hello Tom, you have done very well in putting this guide together. I have always wanted to become a digital entrepreneur for a very long time now. At first, I was interested in dropshipping and now I have decided to settle down with blogging first and probably add dropshipping later. Indeed there are so many downs and ups on this journey to financial freedom via digital entrepreneurship. The one that I have seen scared people away is that it takes time before now can start earning. During this long time of working hard and waiting, many people quit. I have decided to be consistent to the very end.
