How to Build a Review Website: Including Top Tips
Most people do some online research before buying anything or going anywhere these days. Reviews help people make decisions for their purchases. You can build your own review website in order to make money. Having a review website is a great online business. It is cheap to setup, you can do it anywhere, at any time and review anything. These are the reasons I chose to make a living from writing reviews on things I am interested in. This is something you can do too, so here is my guide on how to build a review website.
How to Make Money From a Review Website
When people build a review website, it is so they can make money from it. Reviews are written on certain products or services and the reviewer will give their recommendations. It will be along the lines of, ” If you are a busy household this product will be best for you, click here to buy“.
The “click here to buy” part will be a link that takes the buyer straight to a website where the customer can buy the product or service. This website could be any thing you can think of, but a good example is Amazon. But, what the customer may not know about (or care about) is that the link is an affiliate link.
What is an Affiliate Link?
To monetise a website, the owner will sign up to an affiliate program. This is what companies use to reward websites promoting their products. When you sign up to an affiliate program you can build affiliate links that track purchases through your website. Websites promoting products and services will get a percentage of the sales through the affiliate link.
Basically, you are getting rewarded for sending sales to a website.
Before You Start
Way before you even have a website, you need a few things in place.
Learn About it
You can trawl the internet for information on building a review website, there is a lot of information out there. But, if you are new to it, how do you know if you are not missing something? This is why I recommend signing up to a course. I knew nothing about this kind of online business until I signed up to a course.
I spent a lot of time hunting for some decent training, but the majority of training I found didn’t fill me with confidence. This is because there are a lot of scammers out there that take you money and give you poor quality training materials or nothing. These were “gurus” of affiliate marketing, that were really putting me off. This is because they were asking for money up front and didn’t even give me a hint as to what the training involved.
Choose a Niche
Before you build your review website, you need a theme or niche. You need to choose a niche that you are interested in. This is so you won’t get bored. It is all very well choosing a niche that you think will make money, but if it bores you, you won’t work on it to the best of your ability. There are billions of people on the internet, so there will definitely be some people with the same interests as you. And these people will want to buy products or services related to that interest. You want to aim to be an authority within that niche. Once you get a reputation for knowing your stuff, people put their trust in what you say and take your recommendations.
Build a Website
Building a website is the next step. If you are new to this, It is easier than you think. Most review sites are WordPress websites. WordPress was originally designed for bloggers who are not web designers. This means that you don’t need any coding skills. You can choose themes to determine how it looks and there are lots of different WordPress plugins to help your websites perform in certain ways.
You need a domain name. For it to work properly, this really needs to be a .com domain name. It also needs to be relevant to your niche and allow you to expand your website in the future.
You then need to register it with a domain registrar. But, if you can, it is easier to register your domain name with your website host. All my websites are hosted and registered at Wealthy Affiliate. But, if you want to do it all yourself, click here to find out how to start your own affiliate marketing business.
Join Affiliate Programs
You need to find affiliate programs related to your chosen niche. If you can think of a product or service, there is very good chance that you will find an affiliate program for it. There are affiliate networks you can join too. These are websites where you can join lots of affiliate programs. These are great, as everything is on one place. If you joined lots of affiliate programs through an affiliate network, all of your earnings are in one place. I recommend joining Awin. Many people join the Amazon Associates program for their first affiliate program.
Getting Website Traffic
Once your website has been built you are going to need to create content for people to read. But, in order to attract those people, your content needs to be written in a certain way. It needs to be SEO friendly.
Content needs to be based around keywords. This is because people use certain search terms when looking for information through a search engine. For example, I wrote this post around the keyword of “How to Build a Review Website”. The chances are, you found this page from doing a Google search along the lines of this keyword.
There are certain techniques you need to use to make sure your content is SEO friendly. In a nutshell your content needs:
- to have 1000 to 1500 words for regular posts
- to have 2000 words for competitive keywords
- to include external links
- to include internal links
- to contain relevant a keyword
- to have images with small file sizes
- to have a clean and responsive (mobile friendly) design
- to not have too many affiliate links
Using theses techniques, you stand more chance of your content being at the top of search engine pages. The closer you are at the top, the more people will click on your link and buy through your website. This means you will make more money from your content.
You will notice that the last item on the list above, it “to not have too many affiliate links”. This is because search engines see a site littered with affiliate links to not be a good source of information. This is why you should create content that gives people advice also. On these posts you can link to your reviews.
For example you can write about how to choose the best vacuum cleaner for dog owners. Then you can say “click here to read my review on the best upright vacuum cleaner for dog owners”.
Things You Should Know
I touched on this earlier, but I can’t Stress how important it is to get educated in affiliate marketing. This is how you build a review site. It is quite simple when you know how, but there is a certain way to do it. Doing it the right way gives you better chance of success.
My choice of affiliate training came from Wealthy Affiliate. I believe that they have the best affiliate marketing training for people who want to build a review website. What attracted me to Wealthy Affiliate, was the free membership. This gave me free access to the necessary tools, comprehensive training and set up a free website. With all this I could decide if affiliate marketing was for me without spending a penny. It was ideal, as I was still researching what kind of online business I wanted.
Don't Pick a Niche That is Too Competitive
There are loads of review websites for cameras, but not quite as many for camera accessories. The more competition you have, the harder it will be to get to the top of Google searches. You need to also make sure that people are selling things within your niche with affiliate programs.
Choose a Responsive Theme
A responsive theme is one that works well with mobile devices. I learned this the hard way. My first website worked great on a computer, but was terrible on people’s phones. This was a problem because 75% of visitors to my site were using their phone. So, I had to change my theme and redesign everything on my website. It was worth doing, but I could have done without it.
It Takes Time To Make Money
It takes months before you make pennies with a review website. If anyone tells you different they are wrong or lying. You need a lot of patience when you get in to affiliate marketing, as well as a good work ethic. Therefore, don’t rely on it to be your only source of income straight away.
Do Your Research
Research is essential when you build a review website. You need to research your products, affiliate programs, keywords and your competition. This will make your content creation more effective and of better quality.
Comments are a really good resource to have on your website. When people comment on your content, it shows search engines that your site is active and people are interacting with it. It is also a great way to direct users to certain posts on your site. If someone says that the particular thing you are reviewing isn’t for them, you can post a link of a more suitable product that they might buy.
You do need to keep an eye on comments though. This is because some people try to drop their own affiliate links and backlinks to their site. Also, you need to make sure that there are no spelling and grammar errors.
Google likes a website that has regular posts added to it. These posts need to be spread out. It is not a good idea to post 5 posts in a day. Also, it is good to keep posts updated. This is another way search engines know that you have an active website.
