How To Make Money To Travel The World
Not everyone is motivated by the prospect of being able to afford super cars and Gucci watches. Some people are motivated by living life to the full, enjoying new experiences and seeing the world. Travelling costs money and an online business is a great way to fund it. Here is my guide on how to make money to travel the world.
Why Is An Online Business Good For Travellers?
1. Work From Anywhere
As we can get online pretty much anywhere in the world these days, you always have the opportunity to work from anywhere.
Whether you are in the mountains like me, by the beach or exploring far away cities, there is a good chance that you will have internet access. If you find somewhere that you would like to stay, you will be able to work without interrupting how your business works.
2. Work At Any Time
Many modern transport methods have internet connectivity. So while you are sitting on a train for eight hours, why not earn some money?
The flexibility of being able to work at any time, means that you can fit work around the experiences you want to have wherever you are.
For example, I live in the French alps and as I write this winter is in full swing. Next week I am on a week long freeride snowboard course. I may have to work late at night, but I can fit my work around it.
3. Great Earning Potential
The fact that you have a world wide audience, means that you can earn a lot of money. This obviously depends on what business you choose (I am going to go in to a few options shortly), but when you get it right, you can earn some serious money. This will pay for flights, experiences and general living while you are travelling.
Some online businesses give you the opportunity to earn passive income. This is when you continue to earn money from work you have done some time ago. For example, if you chose affiliate marketing, a blog post can earn you money 24/7 for months.
4. Cost Effective
An online business is a relatively low cost way to start a business. If you were to open a physical shop, you would need to pay the rent of the building, buy all the shelving, pay monthly bills, buy products and pay for marketing etc.
With an online business, you need a computer, a website, an internet connection and some knowledge. This is why online businesses are becoming more popular. In the not too distant future, everything will be online.
5. More Than One Form Of Income
There are multiple ways to monetise an online business. For example, if you decided to start a travel blog, you have a few options for it to make you money, such as:
- Affiliate marketing
- Google AdSense
- Selling advertising space
- Selling memberships
- Selling your services
- Selling your skills
- Sell digital products
- Sponsored content
For more information on this check out my article on how to start a blog for profit.
However, if you need to make a quick bit of cash while travelling, for a bus ticket or for an experience. There are a few ways to earn a small amount of money quickly from your computer, such as online surveys or data entry.
Things You Should Know About Starting An Online Business
1. It Takes Time To Make Money
Don’t just quit your job, book your flight and decide to make money as a travel blogger (or whatever you feel like doing). This is because you won’t make any money to start off with. It will take a long time to build your business and big enough audience to make a reasonable amount of money.
Some reasons it takes a long time to make money are:
- The learning curve – You will need to learn a lot of new techniques.
- Mistakes – You will make mistakes….lots of them. But this is part of the learning curve and unfortunately you won’t notice that you have made the mistakes until you have gained knowledge. Also, many mistakes don’t become apparent until a few months after you have made them. Trust me, I know only too well.
- Google Algorithms – Google puts a new website in what is called the “sandbox”. This makes it difficult for its content to rank highly in search terms. Websites stay in the sandbox for about four months, until they have proved themselves to be a good source of information. When they graduate out of the sandbox, you can get posts ranked in an hour.
- Time to create content – If you decided to start a review website and make money from affiliate marketing, you have to create lots of content. Quality content takes time to write and needs to be over 1500 words long. This may not seem too bad, but the part that takes the time, is the research.
But don’t let these things put you off. Once you have some experience, your business will start to thrive if you do it right. If you are planning on using your online business to fund your travels, start sooner rather than later to give it time to build up before you hit the road.
Ways To Make Money To Travel The World
Now I am going to go through a few ways to make money to travel the world. These are long term businesses that require real commitment to make them work. These are all ways you can fund a lifestyle forever, not as a short term solution to earning money.
1. Social Media Agency
These days social media is an essential part of business. Unfortunately for business owners, it is difficult to find the time to post great content across all social media platforms regularly. This is why many businesses outsource their social media efforts to individuals or agencies who can make the time.
A social media agency is a great way to make money online. This is because it can be very lucrative and if you have a flair for it and invest in some scheduling tools, it isn’t that difficult.
By charging up to $1,000 per month for managing a company’s social media account, you can earn some good money. Depending on how hard you want to work and how much money you want to make, you only need four clients to live comfortably. I go in to more detail in my blog on how to start a social media marketing business, but you need to learn about how to create engaging content for your clients. You can even offer to write blogs for them for extra cash, which can be integrated in to your social media scheduling.
2. Blog Writing
There are a few ways you can make money blog writing. As I mentioned above, you can write blogs for businesses, in order for them to attract more traffic to their websites. To ensure that you write blogs that will do this, you need to learn about Search Engine Optimisation. This is because good SEO techniques will put the blog in front of the right people when they search for certain things online.
If you want to write blogs to build up your personal profile, you can earn money this way too. Writing a personal blog for profit gives you all the opportunities of monetisation I mentioned earlier. People buy in to your personal brand when you prove that your are an authority on a particular subject. They will buy things that you recommend and other companies will want to advertise with you.
2. Drop Shipping
Drop shipping is a way you can sell physical products without having to buy and stock them before you sell them. it is a great business model and when done right can earn you some serious money.
You can attract customers to your online store using SEO techniques, but for drop shipping this is far too slow. Therefore, you need to learn about Facebook marketing to make sure you target your audience within your drop shipping niche. Choosing a the right drop shipping is essential to your success, as is choosing the right drop shipping products.
Drop shipping is made successful by trial and error. This is because you need to make effective adverts and work out how to target your audience in the best way. When you reach the right audience with the right products, the money starts rolling in. The key is to start small and get some data about your audience via the results of your adverts. Once they start working, it is time to scale up.
You do need to pay for adverts to reach your audience. Therefore you need to be prepared to lose some money in the early days. But, see this as paying for information on your audience, so you can tweak your targeting to be more effective.
I am currently launching a drop shipping side of my business. Stay tuned to see how it goes and what I learn during the process.
In my research in to drop shipping, I spoke to someone who gave it a go. He spent $500 on advertising and managed to sell a torch. However, his friend persisted and made $1,000,000 in 9 months selling novelty tea cups!
3. Affiliate Marketing
As you have probably realised by the name of my website, affiliate marketing is my main business. Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting other people’s products and services in return for a percentage of the sales price.
Affiliate marketing is more of a slow burner than drop shipping. This is because you don’t pay for advert to get your content in front of your audience, it is mainly done via SEO. By creating content that people are searching for in the form of product reviews, buyer’s guides etc, you attract traffic naturally.
To ensure that you are creating content people are searching for, you need to do extensive keyword research. This may seem tedious, but it isn’t and it doesn’t take too long to create a list of keywords to base your content around that will last you several months.
Just like drop shipping, you need to choose your affiliate marketing niche well. This can make the difference between a successful business and one that never gets off the ground. I know first hand that choosing the wrong niche will waste your time. Check out my article on how to make money with affiliate marketing for all the details on how it works and what you need to do.
During my time as an affiliate marketer, I have realised that a decent affiliate marketing training course will shorten the path to success. You should avoid “gurus” that promise you the secret to overnight success. If anyone tells you that you can get rich quick by affiliate marketing, they are liars. In fact I just saw someone on social media saying that affiliate marketing was the quickest way of making $40,00 in 1 month. This is true to an extent, but he would have had to work for months or even a couple of years to get to this point.
However, I recommend a great training provider called Wealthy Affiliate. Their comprehensive training and the access to their excellent business tools makes Wealthy Affiliate the place to go for affiliate marketing training. Check out my rundown of the Wealthy Affiliate Free Membership to give you a good starting point. Or you can read my full review of Wealthy Affiliate for my warts n’ all critique of it.
Businesses rely on good content. Therefore, they often employ copywriters to ensure that their content is a good as it can be. Content can be anything from adverts, blogs, social media posts or even emails. A copywriter creates content that communicates, educates, entertains and informs. I go in to more detail in my post on how to become a copywriter with no experience, but copywriting isn’t just about writing blogs or articles anymore. You will need to develop a few skills to make sure you can offer a full service to your clients, such as:
- SEO knowledge
- Research skills
- Social media skills
- Self promotion
- Competitive analysis
5. Professional Skills
If you have a certain skill, you may be able to use it as a way of starting an online business. Examples of these are:
- Graphic design
- Web development
- Software engineering
- Freelance writing
- Consultation (if you have enough knowledge)
These are all things you can learn if you don’t already have the skills. you just have to think about what you want to do in life and start working on being good enough to be able to use these skills from anywhere in the world.
