Have you come across videos of people in sharp suits in Ferraris telling you how much money they have, claiming that they will let you in to the secret of earning millions? When I was looking in to starting my own online business, I found loads of these guys. They promised that if I payed them a small amount of money, they would give me the secret to getting rich in no time at all. During my research I came across Wealthy Affiliate. With my skeptical mind, I wanted to answer the question of “is the Wealthy Affiliate a scam?“.
The world is full of scams and the internet is the easiest way of getting people to fall for them. Many of these scams involve secrets to making money. As I was looking in to starting an online business with no knowledge or experience, I wasn’t going to go in to it blindly.
Why I Chose Affiliate Marketing
First, I will tell you what was appealing about affiliate marketing to me. I did a lot of research in to starting an online business. After ruling out a few things, I saw a lot of potential in affiliate marketing. If I could get it right I could life the lifestyle that I want.
- Allows me to work flexibly
- Is relatively cheap to set up
- Can be lucrative

I live in the French Alps, so I spend all my spare time snowboarding and mountain biking. As you can imagine, this is very weather dependant. My affiliate marketing business allows me to make the most of the good conditions on the mountain. For example, if the snow is good and the sky is blue, I will go snowboarding for a couple of hours in the morning. I can plan my work around the weather forecast and my friend’s and wife’s days off. This means I may be working late at night, but that is my choice. I love it!
However, to get in to affiliate marketing you really need to get educated. This reduces mistakes and speeds up your progress. There are a few people selling affiliate marketing training courses. The problem is, which ones are scams?
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is an online business, where you make money from promoting other people’s products and services. You do this by creating content, such as reviews. When someone likes what they read, they click on the “affiliate link” for that product, which will take them to the website that will allow them to buy that product. For example, the manufacturers website or Amazon. The affiliate link tracks the purchase and gives you a commission for directing the user to the sale.
It is very simple and is an easy process. Also, pretty much anyone can sign up and start promoting on a website.
Pros of Affiliate Marketing
- You don’t need to buy products to stock and sell on
- You don’t need to worry about posting products to customers
- Potential for making lots of money
- You can promote pretty much anything you want. If you can think if it, there will probably be an affiliate program for it.
Cons of Affiliate Marketing
- Very competitive, but there are techniques to help get the edge
- Sometimes commission rates are quite low
- Takes a long time to make money

- Very comprehensive training
- Good features and tools for creating content and monitoring your website

- Some of the tasks during the training seem a bit premature. Such as getting feedback from the community on a site with virtually nothing on it.
- Some times answers from the community are not great. This seems to be because some people try to give advice when they are inexperienced.

Why Can't I Find Bad Reviews of Wealthy Affiliate?
I am going to let you in to a secret. The reason that you cannot find a bad review of Wealthy Affiliate, is because of its own affiliate marketing program. You can make a lot of money by promoting Wealthy Affiliate. Therefore, there are lots of people promoting Wealthy Affiliate making a good living.
Guess what! This is what this website is all about. Becoming an affiliate marketer while living an adventurous lifestyle like me.
You don’t need to promote Wealthy Affiliate if you sign up. I just chose to, as I have got very interested in the subject and it is one of my niches.
One of the reasons you will find lots of amazing reviews about any course about making money online, is due to inexperience. Many people that are creating content to sell these courses think that the only way to do so is to make bold claims. “This will make you rich over night” or ” You will make thousands in just a few months with this simple method”.
These claims are unrealistic, there is no quick way to get rich. If you think there is, go and do that, (and let me know what it is) don’t join Wealthy Affiliate. Because, it takes time and effort to make money. I would rather you knew this fact before you waste your time.
Who Should Sign Up To Wealthy Affiliate?
The idea behind this post is to help you decide whether signing up to Wealthy Affiliate is for you. You can sign up to the free membership. If you are even considering your own affiliate marketing business, this is a no brainer. You literally have got nothing to lose. You don’t even need a credit card. Signing up to the free membership is what I did to test the water.
The premium membership should only be signed up to by those serious about an affiliate marketing business. There is no point going premium if you are not going to use the tools and services available.
If you are an experienced affiliate marketer, you will be able to take advantage of the tools offered. But, Wealthy Affiliate is more for beginners and novices. This is because the training takes you from building your business from scratch.
I started my affiliate marketing business along side my job. I built it up during my spare time, every night after work. Once it got going I started working part-time. Then I managed to make it my full time business (while writing blogs for others and managing a couple of social media accounts).
Who Should Not Sign Up To Wealthy Affiliate?
The fact that you found this page, suggests you have an interest in affiliate marketing. Therefore, you may as well sign up to the free membership, just to check to out.
As I have said before, it takes time to make money with affiliate marketing. Therefore, if you are expecting to dig yourself out of financial difficulties, it will not be the short term answer you are looking for. I am not saying that you shouldn’t sign up, but it will take many months to make money. Therefore, anyone that is expecting to make lots of money in a short amount of time, look elsewhere.
If you don’t like working alone, signing up to Wealthy Affiliate, is not for you. Personally, I love it. I have nobody distracting me, no boss and I can listen to my favourite radio station all day, without someone complaining.
People that don’t like writing, should not sign up to Wealthy Affiliate. Writing is the job. You don’t need to be a novelist, just be able to communicate.
