Making Money Online From Anywhere in The World: How I do it
There is more to life than working for someone else on their timetable. I am a big fan of the outdoors and living in the French alps means there is a lot to keep me entertained. Hiking, mountain biking and snowboarding are just some of the things I want to spend my time doing. Working for someone else is fine, but I have sat tied to someone else’s desk on too many blue sky powder days. Therefore, I had to come up with a way to earn a living while having the flexibility to work when I want. I have found a way, so here is my guide to making money online from anywhere in the world.
Why Work Remotely?
The way technology is these days, you can work from anywhere in the world. Whether that be a home, from a camper van, a surf house, coffee shop or ski resort, you can make money. Even if you do work for someone, it is entirely possible to work remotely. But, why not go the extra step and make money for yourself?
There are certain businesses that allow you to have ultimate flexibility. If the conditions are perfect, I can have a morning on the mountain and work in the afternoon and evening. As long as I complete my job list for the week, I can be flexible and enjoy life while earning money.
This way of life is becoming more popular, as internet access can be found pretty much anywhere. For example the guys at www.gnomadhome.com live the van life and make money online.
This flexibility is the main reason to start an online business. You are not tied to someone else’s working hours, a geographical location or a wage dictated by someone else.
It doesn’t matter whether you are travelling or just want to enjoy what is available locally to you, you can enjoy life and make money at the same time.
How I Do It
I did a lot of research in to starting an online business and found lots of different options. One was drop shipping, but I didn’t want to have to deal with customer service issues for things that were not my fault. I’m not saying that it is a bad option, just not for me. Therefore, I settled on affiliate marketing.
This is the process of creating content (such as reviews) to help people make decisions about their purchases.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?
Affiliate marketing has four steps. I am going to show you each step, using an example.
Step 1 - The search
Steve fancies a new mountain bike and has always wanted a Santa Cruz Megatower. So, he goes to Google and types 2020 Santa Cruz Megatower in to the search bar.
Step 2 - The results
Steve sees the results on the first page of Google relevant to the bike he is interested in. He clicks on the article that he thinks will give him the information he requires. In this case www.MTB-Threads.com.
Step 3 - The content
Steve reads all about the 2020 Santa Cruz Megatower and decides to buy one. He then clicks on the green button to hand over his cash to the online bike shop of which you are an affiliate for.
Step 4 - Making money
When Steve buys the bike you get 3% commission. Depending on the products you are promoting, you can earn anything from 3 to 75% of the value of the product.
This is a really simple and excellent business model that works very well for millions of people all over the world. Now you know the process, you will see it everywhere. Websites for magazines, newspapers, bloggers and review sites all use affiliate marketing to make money.
Pros and Cons of Affiliate Marketing
- Flexibility to enjoy life or do other things
- No limit on the amount of money you can earn
- Not complicated to learn
- It takes a long time to earn any money
Being able to work when I want is the main advantage of having an affiliate marketing business. But, that doesn’t mean there are no sacrifices. I work late at night quite a lot, but this is my choice, as I need to complete my list of tasks for the week and want to go out and enjoy myself. There are times when I have had to say no to going on the mountain with my friends in order to finish my list of jobs. Therefore, being disciplined is the key to success.
Affiliate marketing can be very lucrative, but it takes a long time to earn money. It can take months to earn even pennies. However, I recently heard a story about a guy who made nothing in is first 18 months, but made $100,000 in his second 18 months. This are the figures we are all aiming for.
So How Do I Build an Affiliate Website?
There are four steps to building an affiliate marketing website.
Step 1 - Get Some Training
Affiliate marketing is not complicated to learn, but you need guidance. A proper training course, with a step by step guide to building your business, you won’t miss out anything vital. There are lots of resources with free information on building an affiliate marketing website, but they don’t give you everything. Also, if you are totally new to it, you will definitely miss out important steps and and get stuck.
The internet is littered with “gurus” that have a really aggressive sales approach. Personally, I get put off by these people very easily. I don’t like how pushy they are and I think it is difficult to determine if they are scammers or not.
Step 2 - Build A Niche Website
A niche is a group of people that have a shared interest. Your affiliate website needs to work within one of these niches. This is so you can target an audience, which is super important. I have made the mistake of going too broad with a niche, in the hope of appealing to a wide audience. This was the wrong thing to do, as it means I had too much competition.
Step 3 - Get Traffic To Your Website
You need to attract people to your website, but rather than paying for adverts etc, you can attract them for free. This is done with creating your website content around focussed keywords. Using focussed keywords is a method of search engine optimisation (SEO), that will get free traffic to your website that is more likely to earn you money too.
Step 4 - Monetise Your Website
There are a number of ways you can monetise a website, but affiliate links are the main way for affiliate marketers. Going back to Steve’s Santa Cruz mountain bike, the link he clicked on that took him to the online bike shop, is an affiliate link.
MTB-Threads is a member of the bike shop’s affiliate program. Affiliate programs are what advertisers use to track traffic and purchases through affiliate marketing websites. This is how affiliate marketers get rewarded for their efforts.
Where To Learn All This Stuff
There is quite a lot of information based around this page alone, but, there is a lot more to it. Like I said before, it isn’t difficult, but if you are serious about making money online from anywhere in the world, you should get trained up.
I learned (and still am) from Wealthy Affiliate. This is a “one stop shop” for building your own affiliate marketing business. It includes training, the necessary tools, website hosting and support.
I originally signed up to the free membership to see what it was all about. This was because I was still looking in to options for my online business. I had nothing to lose and I could try out some of the training and practice with two free websites.
The Premium Wealthy Affiliate membership is much more comprehensive than the free one. There is more training and more resources. Really, if you want to make a success of affiliate marketing, you need to go Premium. However, check out the free membership first to see what it entails before going all in.
I have also written a review of Wealthy Affiliate. I explain all the pros and cons of it and why I chose it. To read my review, click on the mountain picture below.
