Start A Business As A Teenager

Start A Business As A Teenager

Some kids have a bit of hustle about them. I remember the kids a school that ran their own little business, selling sweets, trading cards and sticker and starting their own fantasy football schemes. But, what if they started their own online business in their part time? Starting early could mean that they may have never needed to get a regular job. The internet is the perfect place to start earning money along side your school work. So here is my guide on how to start a business as a teenager.

Advantages Of Starting A Business As A Teenager

You Have Time (Part 1)

Believe it or not, you have more time than an adult to work a side hustle. Think about how you spend your spare time and what you could be doing instead to improve your life, not just now but for the future.

  • Video games – Yes they are fun, but you really are not achieving anything (unless you are one of those pro gamers)
  • TV– Endlessly searching for something to watch is not getting you anywhere in life.
  • Social media – This is by far the biggest waste of time. I am very guilty of falling down the social media rabbit hole, but watching clips of people’s dance routines on TikTok isn’t a very valuable use of time.

Of course, these are all great ways to unwind and keep up with what is going on in the world. However, being aware of how much time you spend on these things is important. Think about the things you can be doing to improve your life, rather than not actually moving in the right direction.

You Have Time (Part 2)

By this, I mean you are young. You have plenty of time to learn and perfect the skills to make money online.

Being Able To Enjoy Your Money

Many people don’t make their money until they are much older. This is why you see old fat guys getting out of super cars. Imagine still being young and driving around in your Ferrari. Or if you really want to enjoy your money, travel and see the world, you will get more value for your money than buying a shiny things.

You Can Run An Online Business From Anywhere

Those of you that want to see the world, an online business doesn’t tie you to a particular place like a regular job would. Take your laptop and work from anywhere you choose.

Business Ideas

I am going to go in to a few ways you can earn money online. Some of these ideas will be quick ways to make a little money on the side and some will be businesses that you will need to fully commit to.

Quick Ways To Make A Little Money

These may not be the most exciting or lucrative ways of making money. But, if you have some spare time and want top up your wallet, they are really easy to do.

Data Entry

Yeah, this isn’t particularly exciting, but you don’t need any experience and it is super easy to do.

You need:

  • Basic IT skills – Install software and be able to use a word processor or spreadsheet
  • Typing skills – You need to be able to type quickly and efficiently. You also need to be accurate and not make any mistakes and be willing to check overt what you have done. The faster you are at typing, the more efficient you will be.
  • Organisation skills – A huge part of data entry is organisation. You will have to sort out a big mess of data and put it in to an organised format.
  • To be OK with repetitive work – You will be doing the same type of thing over and over again. There will be a few slight changes, but you need to be prepared for doing the same thing for every job.

Data entry doesn’t pay particularly well. The higher paying jobs are usually taken up by people that have been doing it for a while. The competition is high, as there are people all over the world that are willing to work for peanuts. But, data entry is a way to make a little money along side other things.

Please be aware that data entry jobs are the most common way people get scammed not he internet. This is because they are aimed at people that are really desperate for money and that are easily persuaded by scammers. If you see a data entry company that requires you to pay them to get started, STAY AWAY FROM THEM. Do not pay to earn money!

Surveys

You can actually get paid for filling in surveys. This is because companies use surveys to do market research to find out the opinions of the general public.

You don’t need to have any skills or previous experience to fill in surveys. Obviously you are not going to get rich by doing this, but you can make $200 per year in cash and vouchers. If you are really dedicated to filling in surveys, you can make op to $800 per year.

So the examples above are just to make a little bit of money on the side. But, what if you want to start a business that is sustainable, that will earn you loads of cash for years to come?

Drop shipping is a way of selling products online where you don’ keep the products in stock yourself. Instead you partner with a suppliers that holds and ships the stock for you. All you do is transfer orders from your website to the supplier. This process can also be automated to make life much easier.

Drop shipping has the potential to earn you a huge amount of money. It is common with many young entrepreneurs as it is so accessible. Drop shipping is cheap to start doing and can be done from anywhere.

How To Start

There are a lot of courses you can pay for, but if you don’t have the money to pay for them you will have to do a lot of research. You can find all the information on how to be a drop shipper online. There are lots of free documents out there that will give you an idea of what to research. For example:

  • One of the first things you need to do is choose a niche to work in. This helps you target your audience that will generate lots of sales.

  • Email marketing

By working hard and getting good in-depth knowledge of these aspects, you have the potential to make a serious amount of money.

Affiliate Marketing

This is my primary way of making money and you can do it too. Affiliate marketing is when you promote other people’s products and services and get paid a commission for it. You need to be comfortable with creating content such as product reviews, buyer’s guides and blogs to capture an audience. It is a fantastic business model that allows you to start straight away. However, you need to be aware that you will not get rich overnight. It takes months of working on your website every day before you make a penny. However, once you have put the ground work in and used the correct techniques, you can be earning money 24/7.

How To Start

For affiliate marketing, it is a good idea to get educated. This is because you can be working very hard on the wrong things without realising it. You need to learn some techniques to make your affiliate marketing business a success:

  • Just like a drop shipping business, you need to choose a niche to work in. Getting this right is essential to making your business a success.
  • Learn about search engine optimisation. This isn’t as difficult as it sounds, but you need to get your continent in front of as many people as possible. Good SEO techniques will get you to the top of Google searches, giving you free traffic to your website.
  • Creating a list of quality keywords is essential to know what to write about. Key words are what people type in to search engines and basing your content around them will bring people to your website.

Social Media Agency

I know I said that too much social media is a waste of time, but what if you could make money from running other people’s social media accounts.

Many businesses find it hard to make time to create and post content on their social media accounts. Therefore they are willing to pay someone to do it for them. You can make a great living from doing this. Imagine managing social media accounts for ten businesses. If you do it right, you can charge them $500 to $1,000 each per month.

You will need to learn all about targeting their advertising, the best times to post and the creating the best content for them. You can also top up your back account by persuading them to pay you to write blogs for them.

How To Start

Starting a social media agency isn’t too difficult. You really need to be able to prove to businesses that you are capable of taking care of their social media accounts and that you are trustworthy. You may need to offer to work for free for a few months to prove yourself, but once you have got some experience you can approach other businesses. You can literally walk in to local shops, cafes, bars and gyms and chat to the manager, check out my guide to starting a social media agency.

Copywriter

If you have a flair for words you can learn how to be a copywriter. Copywriters are used by businesses more and more these days. Their main purpose is to write to get people to do something (buy a product, vote, etc) or to inform people. However, being a copywriter is more than banging out blogs or adverts. There is a lot more to it if you want to make some serious money from it. A copywriter does the following:

  • Writing
  • proofreading
  • editing
  • Searching for appropriate images for content
  • planning marketing campaigns
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of your efforts
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Social media
  • Video making
How To Start

In my guide to becoming a copywriter I go in to all the details, but to summarise, you need to build up a digital portfolio to have something you can show to potential clients.

If you don’t yet have anything to show potential clients, you can create speculative adverts that will give you a chance to show off.  All copywriters do this to show business that they can create content within their industry.

Start by creating some content for something that you currently have or might need. Create content for all the different media, to let potential clients know that you are versatile.

Blogging

This is another one for those of you that like writing. There are a few different types of blogger:

  • Personal blogger – Document their lives by writing regular blogs. This is a bit like social media.
  • Blogger for business – When people write blogs for businesses, it is to attract visitors to a website by informing their audience.
  • Affiliate blogger – These guys write reviews, guides and provide information on products and services. They make money from affiliate links associated with the product or service.
  • Freelance blogger – Freelance bloggers get paid writing blogs for businesses. This is to inform their audience and attract traffic to their website.
How To Start

If you have some blogs that you have written to show potential clients you are can show them what you are capable of. But if not, don’t worry too much, you can still contact businesses and offer your services. You may need to write a few for free to start off with, but once you have proven yourself you can charge $80 to $200 per blog depending on the size of them.

That Is How To Start A Business As A Teenager

These are some ideal businesses you can start as a teenager. You can do any of them as a side hustle from home. By starting any of these businesses, you can get well on your way to financial in your younger years. Just be aware that there is no such thing as a get rich quick scheme. It takes time to make money, so don’t expect to be driving to school in a Lamborghini just yet.

I recommend that you get educated for the business that you intend to start. Some of these courses are pretty expensive, but not all of them, some are even free. Maybe you could get some help from your parents to get you started. Instead of getting a new Playstation for Christmas, why not ask for a course to help you start your business?
