Starting A Blog For Income
One of the best ways to earn money doing the thing you love is starting a blog for income. By writing a blog, you can explore your passions, inform others out them and help people with similar interests by sharing your knowledge. When I first started blogging, I simply started writing about all aspects of mountain biking. I wrote about how to get in to mountain biking, what you need and where to go. When I started writing about products that I recommended, I started to earn some money.
As a blogger, you can write about pretty much anything. For example, hobbies, aspects of your life, sports you are interested in, technology, photography, travel, anything! However, if you are planning on starting a blog for income, you need to carefully consider what you base your blog on. This is because that not all niches are profitable. I recommend that you check out my guide to choosing a niche before you commit to anything.
By making your blog website great, you will develop a following. By putting effort into the right places, you will eventually become an authority in your subject or niche. It is at this point when you can start to make a great living from your blog.
Despite what you may hear from online ‘gurus’, you won’t get rich overnight. But, it is possible to make a good living from your blog.
Starting A Blog
For people that may be particularly tech-savvy, starting a blog for income may be a bit intimidating. But, getting started with a blog isn’t as difficult as you may think, this is thanks to the WordPress. WordPress is a platform that allows people to build and manage blogs without having to learn how to code. To give your blog the look and style you want it to have, you choose one of the thousands of customisable themes. In addition to this, you can give your blog different functions with various plugins.
If you have chosen a niche, you may have an idea of what you are going to call your blog. But, before you go further with setting it up, I urge you to give your domain name some careful consideration. To help you, I have written a guide on choosing a domain name, that I recommend you take a look at.
Find A Good Website Host
To have a WordPress blog, you need to find a website host that is fast, reliable, secure and good value for money. I recommend SiteRubix or Bluehost for these reasons and they also make it very easy to build your blogs. SiteRubix comes as part of this affiliate marketing training program, which is how I recommend that you get started, as it gives you access to everything you need.
Write Some Great Blogs
Once you have you have chosen your niche, domain name and set up your blog, it is time to create content. Content is everything you put on your website, from blog articles, videos, photos and infographics. This is the most important part of starting a blog for income, and your content needs to be relevant to your niche and as helpful as possible, giving your readers valuable information. The phrase that should be going through your head all the time as a blogger, is “content is king”.
When you are coming up with ideas for content for your blog that you intend to monetise, you need to make sure it attracts traffic and ultimately sells products or services.
To ensure that you can do this, your content needs to be targeted at your intended audience. To target your audience, you need to write content that people are searching for online. This is where keyword research comes in. Keyword research is essential, as it gives you a list of content that people are looking for and will find. Check out my guide to keyword research for all the methods.
Building Your Audience
Without an audience, you won’t make any money from your blog. But, unfortunately, this is the hardest part, and it is a painfully slow process. Even after you have written lots of blogs, you will only get a handful of website visitors, but you need to keep pushing on and keep creating.
One of the reasons it takes so long is because new websites get put in the Google Sandbox. This makes it difficult for your content to rank in people’s searches. Google does this to make sure that your website offers lots of valuable information to its users. It takes roughly four months (it can take a year in some cases) for a website to get out of the sandbox if it is updated consistently with quality content. Once out of the sandbox, it is easier for your content to rank. This is when you will start to see more visitors to your blog and more income.
If your content is particularly good, it will start to be shared on social media channels and increase your audience further.
Your keyword research will help, but there are some other skills you must learn to get your content in front of your intended audience.
There are certain techniques that you need to use to make your content SEO friendly. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and this is how search engines determine how relevant your content is to people’s searches. See my SEO checklist to see how you can get your blogs to the top of Google.
There are other ways you can build your audience, from social media marketing to answering people’s queries on question and answer websites, such as Quora.
Building an audience takes a long time, and this is what puts people off starting a blog for income. Many people give up before their audience has developed to a level that makes them money. Therefore, persistence is key to your success.
When you start to get some people visiting your blog, you need to pre-sell. This is when you make sure your readers are ready to buy a product or service when you direct them to the seller’s website.
You do this, by building your trust by giving your readers lots of helpful information. When you come across as informed about the subject, you can give your readers recommendations for solving their problems and helping them with purchasing decisions.
Many bloggers fail at this because they fill their blogs with sales ads and promotions. People recognise this straight away and are instantly put off. So when you post content that is balanced, helpful and informative. For example, if you write a review, you need to write about things that you would buy yourself, or alternatively, say why you wouldn’t buy it and offer an alternative.
Monetise Your Blog
There are several ways you can monetise your blog. Examples are adverts, selling memberships, selling digital products etc. But, the best way, is to start affiliate marketing. However, another big mistake that bloggers do, is monetising too early. You need to make sure that your blog is a quality resource that people will like and get value from. Also, don’t directly monetise every blog you write. This is because your audience won’t like it, but also it is bad for your SEO, as Google will punish you with lower rankings.
Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting other people’s products and services. Affiliate marketing is perfect for content such as reviews, buyer’s guides or anything that involves recommending something.
Your first step to affiliate marketing is to find relevant affiliate programs to your niche. Affiliate programs allow you to generate affiliate links. You drop these links into your content, and when someone clicks on them, they will be seamlessly taken to the online store where they can buy the product or service you recommend. All the sales you generate will be tracked by the affiliate program, which will award you a percentage of the sales price.
Learn To Convert
When starting a blog for income, you need to learn how to maximise your conversions. Conversion is a term that describes the process of turning your readers in to customers. You do this by providing valuable and helpful content that directs your readers to your affiliate links and buy through them. The more conversions you get, the more money you will make. It is really important to not be pushy and salesy with your wording. This puts people off straight away. Therefore, your writing style need to be natural, organic and helpful, giving your readers recommendations.
Be Passionate About Your Niche
The main reason you will be considering starting a blog for income is the money. But, you need to think deeper than that, in the fact that it is an opportunity to work in a field that you enjoy. By choosing a niche that you are truly passionate about, you will enjoy your work. This will come through in your content, and your readers will gain more trust in you. Many bloggers started out not having the intention of making money, but to have fun. These have become the most successful, as their content is genuine, and the affiliate marketing came later when they had already built their audience. Most conversions happen organically, so make sure your blog is based on something you enjoy.
