What Is A Keyword Research Tool For?
Search engines organise content to show the user the most relevant information based on their search term. One of the ways that search engines determine content’s relevancy, is by looking at its keyword.
Keywords describe your post’s content and are the search term you want your content to rank with. When people search for the keyword you are targeting (if your content has been created in the right way), they should see your post.
Why Do I Need To Do Keyword Research?
To make sure that you create content that people are going to find, you need to do some good keyword research. This isn’t as painful or as boring as you may think. But, if you commit an hour to it, you can create a list of keywords to base your content on that will last you months.
Keyword research helps you to understand the people within your niche. This is because it gives you specific information that helps you find out the following things:
- What people searching for
- The number of people searching for it
- How they want their information
- How many other websites are targeting the same keywords you want to use
Once you realise these things, you can create content that will attract the right people to your website. This will lead to more traffic and more business. A keyword research tool is essential for gathering this information.
How Do I Do Keyword Research?
Before you get started with the actual keyword research, you need to think about your customers and what they want. This is a planning step that you should not avoid, as the people that do avoid it will fail to reach their audience.
If you don’t do this part properly, you are just creating content based on what you think people are searching for. Focussing on the behaviour of your target market and the keywords they use will mean that your effort will be much more effective. I will explain this by creating a hypothetical example.
You want to build an affiliate marketing website in the juicer niche. Your goal with this website is to review juicers and provide information to people that want to use or already use juicers. Therefore, you want your content to appear in these people’s online searches organically. Therefore you first need to ask yourself some questions:
- What types of juicers are people searching for?
- Who is searching for them?
- Are juicers popular at different times of the year?
- What words are they using hen they search?
- What questions do they ask?
- What devices are they searching on?
- Why do people search for juicers? (e.g. health and fitness reasons)
- Where are potential customers located?
But, the biggest question you need to ask, is “how can I create the best content about juicers and juicing that will provide people with the information they are looking for?
Discovering keywords is a whole different blog post. There are a lot of techniques you can use from the alphabet soup method, using Google autocomplete, searching relevant product on Amazon are just a few examples. I have written a guide on all the methods of discoing keywords in my post how to do keyword research for content marketing.
But how do you know if the keywords that you have discovered are any good?
What Does A Keyword Research Tool Give Me?
Once you have some potential keywords, you need to make sure that they are quality keywords. This is where a keyword research tool comes in. So, what is a keyword research tool for?
By entering your newly discovered keyword into a keyword research tool, you can find out several important things. I use Jaaxy, which is a very powerful keyword research tool with several other features to help you with your keyword research. Check out my rundown of Jaaxy to see what it is capable of.
The first thing you will be able to discover is other keywords, common questions and topics that are related to it. This will give you even more keywords to write about. For example, by entering the keyword “juicer”, I get related terms, such as:
- Cold press juicer
- Orange juicer
- Juice recipes
- Amazon juicers
- Best juicer to buy
The next thing you will see is the search volume each keyword gets. This is very important, as you want to make super that people are searching for it.
Keywords with high search volumes, take a lot of work to rank highly. This is due to what is known as keyword difficulty. Keyword difficulty can incorporate search engine result features (SERP features). SERP features are things like rich snippets and the knowledge graph and if page 1 of Google has a lot of search result with these features, it can be very difficult to get your content on to it. It is common to have page 1 of Google taken up with big brands, meaning that the keyword has a high difficulty rating. Therefore, it is not always the best idea to target keywords with high search volumes.
Generally, keywords with higher the search volumes are more difficult to achieve organic ranking success. However, if you choose keywords with search volumes that are too low, you risk not attracting any traffic to your website at all.
If your keyword has too much completion, it will be very difficult to get it to rank highly. It is not impossible, but more established websites the yours will have a higher domain authority.
Competition is good, as you know that other people think that the keyword is worthy of their effort.
Jaaxy has a nice feature, in that it tells you how many visits your website will get, if you manage to get it on to the first page of search engines.
The Keyword Quality
The KQI (keyword quality indicator) in Jaaxy tells you if the keyword is poor, normal or great. This is based on the characteristics I have mentioned above, and if it makes sense grammatically. The problem you get with some keywords is that they have a high search volume and low competition, but they are not grammatically correct. These are very difficult to weave into your content.
How To Choose The Right Keyword
Now you know what information a keyword research tool can give you, you can use this information to be strategic I choosing your keywords to give your content the best chance of being seen by your audience.
Carefully Consider Search Volume
You may think that it would be great to rank highly with a keyword that has a high search volume. For example, according to Jaaxy (the keyword research tool I use) at the time of writing this, says that the search term “beer” has 61,842 monthly searches. The problem with a keyword like this is that it is ambiguous and not focussed.
Does the searcher want to know how beer is made? Where to buy it? The most popular? The most alcoholic? Search engines don’t know, therefore, they just bring up various beer companies and local bars in the search results.
But, if you look at the “people also ask” box, you get search terms related to beer. A good example is “Is beer good for health?” This currently has 160 searches per month, which is much lower, but it is a more specific search term. Therefore, you will have a better chance of attracting traffic with by focussing on a keyword do this type.
We call this type of keyword “longtail”, as it is made up of more than two or three words. Longtail keywords that have lower search volumes often convert better. This is because the people searching for them want more specific information and their searches have more intent.
Another good example of a longtail keyword, that would work for someone in the beer niche, would be “beer gift baskets”. This has a monthly search volume of 3,822 and is more targeted. This would be searched for by people wanting to buy beer gifts for somebody in their life.
You need to aim for keywords with a monthly search volume that is over 100. To make suer that you are going to reach your audience. This may not seem like much, but a successful website needs to be updated with lots of content consistently.
Check Out Your Competition
When you have a long list of high volume keywords, you need to determine if how easily they will rank.
You may want to prioritise high-volume keywords that your competitors are not ranking for. This strategy is for when you want to take advantage of the opportunities your competitors’ have missed. Alternatively, you could see which keywords from your list your competitors are already ranking for and make those your priority. This is a more aggressive strategy that targets keywords your competitors are already performing well for.
To give yourself a chance of ranking highly, aim to use keywords with low competition, preferably below 50 in the early days at least.
Plan Your Keywords Around The Seasons
Seasonal trends can be used to your advantage. Going back to the beer niche, you could create content based on the keyword “Christmas beer gift baskets”. This has a monthly search volume of 112, but only has 15 other websites using it.
This is a specific longtail keyword that you know will be relatively easy to rank for. Therefore, you should create the content months in advance, to make sure it people will find it in time to place their orders.
Keywords With Intent
Many different types of search bring up different types of search result. I go into them more in my post how to get your website to the top of Google, but one of the main types of searches you should be aware of is keywords with intent.
There are a few different types of keyword with intent, which ones you decide to use all depend on the goals of your business.
The searcher is looking for the best solution. These types of keywords are based on content such as guides and content that answers your audience’s questions. For example:
- [product name]
- what is [product name]
- how does [product name] work
- how do I use [product name]
The searcher has a good idea of a solution and is looking at their options. They are further along the purchasing process and comparing specific features of products or services that will meet their requirements.
You can add words to your keywords like:
Your keywords will look something like the examples below:
- best [product name]
- [product name] reviews
- compare [product name]
- what is the top [product name]
Keywords with transactional intent are the most likely to convert. They are typically based on or include terms such as price, brand, and location.
Your transactional keywords will probably look like:
- how much does [product name] cost
- [product name] in [location]
- order [product name] online
- [product name] near me
- affordable [brand name] [product name]
Summary Of Quality Keywords
To summarise, it is recommended to choose keywords that:
- Are specific (longtail)
- Target keywords with intent
- Have a monthly search volume above 100
- Have a less than 50 other websites using it
